Monica J. Beasley received her M.FA. in painting from Northwestern University in 2002. Since the early 2000’s she has created a broad range of work exploring themes of femininity, love and daintiness. Her work has reflected on her southern roots, collected memories and remnants of the past. Her works deploy different materials and techniques from ready-made objects, such as sewing patterns, spoons, and aprons to traditional media: paint and paper.Over the past ten years, Monica has charted her childhood by creating videos of her father and interviewing her 98 year old grandmother about our first African -American president. She has honored her great aunts by developing a series called the Toile Series. Presently, Monica is working on a series of floral collages. The floral patterning was first just studies and “play” but later the arrangements began to grow into finished works. Gracefulness, delicacy, randomness, colorful, playful, and precious are words that describe Monica’s work.
